Society has a problem: Individuals who drive while under the influence. To others on the road, as well as themselves, these people endanger welfare and risk lives. Add to that DUI repeat offenders – in addition to first-time offenders – and you’ve got a real mess. There is actually a record of someone being not only pulled over but arrested for two separate DUIs in under 12 hours!
How is this happening – and how can we assist DUI repeat offenders so they don’t repeat again?
Repeat Offender Harsher Punishments
If you’ve had too much to drink, you’re in no shape to drive. It is absolutely wrong to get behind the wheel of a car. These are things repeat DUI offenders simply have to come to grips with. There are no ands, ifs, or buts about it. We simply cannot teach repeat DUI offenders a lesson with simple fines. On the other hand, the fact they absolutely must change their ways may be better recognized if repeat offenders face substantial jail time and criminal charges.
If Convicted of a DUI, Require Mandate Ignition Interlocks
Rather than receiving a second or third DUI offense charge/conviction, people who have consumed too much alcohol may be stopped before they even start their car by installing ignition interlocks. If they want to start their vehicle, anyone who has already had a first time DUI conviction would have to get past their interlock device first. Into the mouthpiece connected to the device, they must blow a good lungful of air. If alcohol is detected, the car simply will not start. Time to call for an Uber.
Make Sure That Needed Help Is Available
For those dependent on alcohol, alcoholics, and those in need of psychiatric care, treatment programs absolutely must be made available. Rather than getting the help they need, too many people are embarrassed by the problems they have – and may, in fact, be suffering from. The stigma surrounding these conditions must be abolished. In this way, those needing help may feel more comfortable to pursue assistance, therapy, classes, group sessions, etc., without the worry of embarrassment or being singled out.
Why Do DUI Repeat Offenders Exist?
What’s so hard about stopping someone after their first DUI offense? Why are there so many repeat offenders? Several things have to happen in order for a repeat DUI offender to be caught:
- A first time DUI must occur.
- The person having committed that first time DUI must make the decision, once again, to drink and drive. (Fortunately, this doesn’t always happen.)
- That person who chooses to drink and drive yet again, must be caught, then arrested, then charged with and convicted of another DUI.
Rehabilitation For DUI Offenders
In many cases, COVID-19 restrictions are still in place. We, At Jackson-Bibby Awareness Group, adapted with the pandemic. We currently offer – until further notice – DUI telehealth sessions, rather than attending sessions in-person. For promoting rehabilitation and conducting treatment, we believe, given the current pandemic situation, DUI telehealth sessions are the best method.
For a limited period only, these sessions are conducted via online platforms and will eventually be resumed in person. But, when the pandemic is under control and it’s possible to attend sessions in person, attendees will once again be able to attend classes/sessions physically.
