Even if you are a first offender, a DUI conviction is not something to be taken lightly. The terms of your sentence will most likely include the completion of a suitable treatment program. At Jackson-Bibby Awareness Group, we offer programs for both first offenders and multiple offenders. Utilizing a combination of educational and counselling sessions, both group and individual, DUI treatment programs are targeted at reducing the chances of reoffending.

In this article, we share with you what you can expect during DUI treatment programs.

Assessment

Before assigning you to a program, an assessment will be carried out to understand your relationship with alcohol or the substance in question. This allows treatments and sessions to be targeted towards your individual circumstances.

Educational Sessions

A number of educational sessions are compulsory in all DUI treatment programs. These sessions will focus on the dangers of driving while under the influence, the legal and social repercussions of a DUI conviction as well as introduce some healthy coping mechanisms on warding off chemical dependency. The aim is to help participants prevent further DUI convictions by understanding the consequences their actions can have, both on themselves and those around them.

Counselling Sessions

Counselling sessions are held both in group settings and one-on-one. The goal is to help each individual identify the root of their substance abuse problem. More often than not, these problems stem from traumatic events in a person’s life, manifesting itself as a desire to escape from emotional pain. However, when that is taken on the road, the lives of others are endangered as well.

Group sessions enable participants to share what they are going through and ask for help. When individuals going through the same problem come together to share insights, participants do not feel alone, knowing that there are others going through the same thing as they are. A supportive social network can prove to be key on the path to recovery.

Exit Interviews

Upon completion of the DUI treatment program, an exit interview can be conducted, typically for multiple offenders. The purpose of this interview is to evaluate the success of the program in light of the progress made by the participant. It further serves to enforce the coping mechanisms and strategies imparted throughout the course of the program.
