If you have ever been charged with a DUI, you will know that a conviction will bring with it many severe penalties that will greatly impact your life. The conviction might lead to jail time or time spent in mandatory DUI education classes. The extent and nature of these classes will depend on your type of conviction. There are a few general types of DUI programs around and they vary in length depending on the offense. Some courses can last about 12 hours which spans over a couple of weeks for minor offenses, all the way up to 30 months for those repeat offenders.

Wet Reckless Programs

A driver that has a conviction of driving recklessly with alcohol in their body will face the most lenient education requirements. Drivers will need to take 12 hours of classes, spread out between 6 to 12 weeks. This charge exists as a plea deal for drivers in certain situations.

First Time Offender Programs

If you are facing your first DUI charge, you need to join one out of the two DUI education programs. If you have a Blood Alcohol Content of less than 0.20%, you will need to go for a 30-hour program over three months. This program includes classes on alcohol and drugs, as well as counseling. If your DUI conviction involves having a Blood Alcohol Content of more than 0.20%, you will need a more in-depth education program. The program consists of 60 hours of counseling and alcohol and drug education classes over 9 months.

Second Time Offender Programs

If you are facing the second DUI charge in the past 10 years, you need to take an 18-month long DUI education program. It involves 12 hours of classes and group counseling for 52 hours. It also requires that individuals complete community reentry monitoring, which will take up to six hours. Also, you need to go for individual interviews with a counselor once every two weeks at the start of the program.

Third Time Offender Programs

If you are facing the third DUI charge in the last 10 years, you will have to take part in the third-time offender program. This type of program is more extensive than the others and it lasts for 30 months in total. It involves group counseling for 78 hours and 12 hours of classes. You will need to complete 120 to 300 hours of community service as well. On top of that, you need to go for regular interviews with a counselor throughout the whole program.
