After a DUI offense, you can be made to attend DUI education classes as part of your sentence. Or you can be strongly encouraged to attend, even if it is not mandatory under your sentence. DUI education classes can benefit you in a number of ways, regardless of whether you are a first offender or repeat offender. In this article, we share with you some things that DUI education classes will teach you.

Responsible Decision Making

The largest takeaway you should get from DUI education classes is how to make responsible decisions. This includes the decision whether or not to drink, to keep company with people who encourage unhealthy drinking habits, and many more. This can be done through roleplaying in various scenarios and understanding the consequences your decisions can have on yourself and others.

Responsible Drinking

The fact is that many DUI offenders did not just get unlucky one night after an uncharacteristic drinking episode. Many DUI offenders have long and complicated histories with alcohol, which is why any form or level of drinking is not condoned in DUI education classes. However, it is understood that we often find ourselves in situations where alcohol is available, and you may feel obliged to drink out of politeness. The key is knowing when to say no as well as practicing responsible drinking habits, such as knowing when to stop and having a backup plan for getting home.

Trigger Identification

When it comes to overcoming alcohol addiction, one of the most important steps is to identify your triggers. Knowing what pushes you to drink excessively can help you with formulating a recovery plan. When you recognize a trigger, immediately take steps to prevent yourself from drinking, such as calling up a friend or going for a walk.

Identify Positive Influences

Unfortunately, it is often the case that alcohol abusers drink when they are around bad company, who encourage their unhealthy drinking habits and may even do so in a group. In order to take charge of your life, it’s important to surround yourself with positive influences, people who will encourage you on the path to sobriety instead of pushing you to drink excessively and engage in risky behaviors. Having a supportive social group can make all the difference when it comes to recovery, and DUI education classes will drive home the importance of having healthy social support.

Participate in DUI Education Classes from A Safe Distance

At Jackson-Bibby Awareness Group, we are currently conducting DUI education classes from a safe distance, that is to say, remotely. We offer individual and group counselling sessions via Zoom, which you are expected to attend and participate in actively. Telehealth sessions are conducted for a limited period only and DUI education classes will be resumed in person as soon as it’s possible to, in light of the current situation.
