Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, online counselling and therapy sessions may have been the exception instead of the norm. However, they can be just as engaging and useful as in-person sessions as long as you make the most out of them. In this article, we share with you some top tips on making the most out of your DUI telehealth sessions.

Get into The Right Headspace

With in-person sessions, there are often a few steps you have to go through before your session: get dressed to go out, travel to your appointment, enter the venue and many more. While these steps may seem insignificant, they have helped in building up a routine over the weeks, getting you into the right headspace to start your session. With telehealth sessions, you will find that this entire routine is missing.

If you need help getting yourself into the right headspace, give yourself some time before the start of the session to just relax. Do what you need to, including getting comfortable and fetching a glass of water or tea before logging on. You will find yourself refreshed and ready to engage fully with the session.

Go in with An Open Mind

You may be unsure what to expect of telehealth sessions, especially if you are new to them. From group sessions to individual therapy, always go into sessions with an open mind and preferably having given some thought to what you would like to talk about and work through. Is there anything you are struggling with? Do you need help? Never be afraid to voice these out and learn new coping mechanisms.

Give It Some Time

Just like you, your therapist is adjusting to DUI telehealth sessions. With in-person sessions, the whole process may have been pretty standard: enter the office, sit down, get comfortable and start talking. You can see for yourself when your therapist is taking down notes and perhaps even accept subconscious cues to body language.

However, all these may not be the case with telehealth sessions. Your therapist may need to verbalize what they are doing to explain any pauses into conversation. By giving yourself and your therapist some time to adjust to online sessions, you will find that things will soon develop into a comfortable routine.
