If you know you are prone to excessive drinking or if you have a loved one with the problem, having a DUI prevention plan in place can help. Not only does a DUI put the offender’s own life at risk, it poses a danger to others on the road and has the potential to ruin livelihoods and relationships. The best way to prevent accidents from happening is to nip them in the bud before they can take place.

In this article, we share with you some simple ways a DUI prevention plan can help you.

Designate A Driver

If you often go out drinking with the same group of people, take turns to be the designated driver. This person will be responsible for getting everyone home safely at the end of the night. A designated driver should be reliable with no trouble avoiding drinks and have a valid license. Ensure that the driver has the address of everyone in the group as well as their emergency contact information.

Sleep Over

There may be some special occasions throughout the year where you tend to stay out late. This can include New Year’s Eve, Independence Day and many more. The best way to avoid drunk driving is simply to book a hotel room and stay over, or crash at a friend’s place. If you do not need to get home the same night, there’s no risk of you drunk driving.

Start the Night Early

Let’s say you are hosting an event where alcoholic drinks will be served. To encourage responsible drinking and prevent DUIs from happening, you may want to start the night a little earlier than intended. Start by serving food and getting everyone’s stomachs full. When that happens, there will be less room for alcohol and no one is at risk for drinking on an empty stomach, which can exacerbate the effects of alcohol. Also make sure that alternative drinks such as juices and sodas are available for those who do not wish to drink.

An hour or so before the end of the event, stop serving alcoholic drinks. This will prevent guests from getting too drunk and attempting to drive home. In addition, an early start means an early end to your event, where public transport options are still available for those who are in no state to be driving.

Rehabilitation Plans After A DUI

Although DUI prevention plans focus on nipping accidents in the bud before they happen, there are rehabilitation options open to offenders. At Jackson-Bibby Awareness Group, we believe that attending sessions regularly and staying committed to a prevention plan is the best way for DUI offenders to prevent reoffending.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, DUI telehealth sessions have temporarily replaced in-person classes. These sessions will be conducted via online platforms for the time being and will be resumed in person as soon as it is deemed to be safe.
