The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we do things, and that includes rehabilitative counseling for DUI offenders. Instead of the traditional in-person discussion and counseling sessions, this has been transformed into DUI telehealth sessions. If you are confused about what that means for your counseling and what you can expect at these sessions, read on to find out more in this article.
Who Should Attend DUI Telehealth Sessions?
Both first-time and repeat offenders can benefit from attending DUI telehealth sessions. Although the length and frequency will differ, both are aimed at rehabilitation and reducing the chances of further repeat offences. Furthermore, it can be mandated by law.
How Are DUI Telehealth Sessions Conducted?
Out of compliance with safe distancing measures, DUI telehealth sessions are conducted remotely via an online platform. This means that you can attend sessions from home through the use of a teleconferencing app such as Zoom or Skype. These apps can be accessed via desktop, tablets or phones.
What Happens During A DUI Telehealth Session?
Much the same things go on in a DUI telehealth session as you would expect out of in-person counseling. The only difference is that they will be taking place virtually. What goes on during DUI telehealth sessions include:
- Education and discussion sessions
- Assessments
- Group and individual counseling
What Are The Different Programs Available For First-Time And Repeat Offenders?
At Jackson-Bibby Awareness Group, we have specially curated programs targeted at first-time and repeat offenders. The main differences lie in the care, frequency and length of these sessions. While programs for first-time offenders seek to reduce the chances of reoffending based on an analysis of risk factors, programs for repeat offenders incorporate more group discussions and individual counselling sessions.
Below is an overview of the DUI telehealth sessions for first offenders we offer:
- BAC below 0.08%: 12 hour program
- BAC below 0.15%: 3 or 4 month program
- BAC between 0.15% to 0.19%: 6 month program
- BAC above 0.2%: 9 month program
More details about DUI telehealth sessions for repeat offenders are as below. If you have committed a second DUI offense within 10 years of your first conviction, it is mandatory for you to complete a multiple offender program.
- 12 month program consisting of a combination of education sessions, group sessions, individual counselling and an exit interview.
- 18 month program, of which Phase 1 will be identical to the 12 month program. Phase 2 lasts for 6 months and consists of monthly re-entry sessions.
Rehabilitation from A Safe Distance
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, we are now offering DUI telehealth sessions instead of in-person sessions at Jackson-Bibby Awareness Group. Given the current situation, we believe that remote sessions are the best way of conducting counseling and promoting rehabilitation. Most importantly, do note that DUI telehealth sessions are only a temporary measure and as soon as we receive the all clear, group sessions will be held in person once again.
